The City of Zanesville is working with a local engineering firm and a local contractor on a 48 inch sewer line that runs down the middle of Main Street in downtown Zanesville. The City regularly cleans and inspects the sewer lines throughout the City. During an inspection 5 years ago, City Administration was advised that a section of the hand laid brick that was installed over 120 years ago collapsed. Current administration contracted with a local engineer and contractor to make repairs to the sewer line underground. This was done to try and limit the inconvenience to City residents and businesses located within the Downtown area. However, the sewer line has continued to deteriorate.
The deterioration has created an unsafe working condition for the contractor to fix the issue while underground. To provide a safe working environment for all persons working on this project, the City will have to close the street and excavate the sewer line to make the repairs safely. On September 14, 2020 at 7:00 am Main Street in downtown Zanesville from 7th Street to 9th Street will be closed until the repairs are completed. Traffic will be detoured to Market Street and Marietta Street as alternate east / west routes. Message boards and signage will be installed to indicate the detour routes. A portion of 8th Street from Main Street to South Street will also be closed to local traffic only with access maintained from the south.
